It still is so hard to wrap your mind around the fact that Tom Petty is no longer with us, but if the last couple of weeks are any indication, his legacy, music, and spirit won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
No matter your age, I guarantee that at some point in your life you have found yourself singing one of Tom’s hits in an almost subconscious manner. That was the effect his music had on not only his hardcore fans but even those drive-by listeners. Whether it was with the Heartbreakers, Traveling Wilburys or with Mudcrutch, Tom was relentlessly creating hit after hit without ever compromising his role as a true rockstar. He was one of the most unique and original voices in music history, and his music perfectly encapsulated so many pillars of rock and roll: truth, freedom, love, death and rebellion. His peers called him a poet, who had the innate ability to write songs that touched us to our core. He wrote songs that we all could relate to in some way or another. His songs helped us through the hard times, helped us find ourselves, and sometimes when you felt all alone, you knew there was a Tom Petty song that could lift your spirits.
For those true fans, we are heartbroken. We feel Tom is irreplaceable, and in many respects he is. He was a musician’s musician, a songwriter’s songwriter. So many of his peers had such profound respect for his career and how he was able to craft such a lasting legacy doing it his way. We have lost one of the great American songwriters and great American bandleaders, but we will always have his music, his words, and his legacy. BUT today would have been Tom’s 67th birthday so let’s celebrate his life and turn this video up LOUD! Thank you Tom!
