Jerry and Dickey 1973

Dickey Betts and Jerry Garcia, two iconic players who played with two of the most iconic bands of their generation got together in 1973 and jammed out to Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup’s ‘That’s Alright Mama.’ I’m sure you guys all know this but it was also Elvis’ first #1 hit way back when. On June 10, two of those acts crossed paths when the Allman Brothers opened for the Grateful Dead at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington D.C. It was, by all accounts, an amazing concert, starting with opening act Wet Willie, continuing with the Allmans and concluding with a powerful, and lengthy, set by the Dead. Toward the end of the Dead’s set, Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts joined the band for this incredible 13-plus minutes of wow on “That’s Alright Mama.”
